The Center is planning to allow retrofitting of BS-VI petrol cars with CNG kits, which can reduce fuel expenditure by around 40-50%. The Ministry of Road Transport issued a draft notification to establish emission and other norms for such retrofitment.

The demand was felt for some time as only BS-VI emission norms compliant vehicles were being sold across the country, officials said, adding that till now the BS-IV emission norms were met. CNG retrace is allowed to the vehicles doing the same. ,

“This is a very positive step by the government as CNG as a fuel will bring great relief to the common people from the high expenditure on petrol. Second, it is a green fuel. Since the government has proposed to install CNG kits in vehicles with engine capacity up to 1500 cc, it will cover all cars and also some SUVs,” said transport expert Anil Chhikara.

Chhikara said the change was necessary given that it is mandatory for commercial vehicles plying in Delhi and its suburbs to be on CNG.

The ministry said this would be allowed for vehicles whose Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) is up to 3.5 tonnes and the type clearance for vehicles with CNG kit would be valid for three years.

Such approval will be renewed once in every three years.

Retrofitment of CNG may be around in the kit of such vehicles.
